Kukje Gallery is proudto present an exhibition of recent works by the internationally renowned artist, Anish Kapoor. Titled Gathering Clouds, the exhibition will showcasesculptures that reflect his mastery of formal investigation and material science.This will be his third exhibition at the gallery following previous shows in 2003 and 2008.Spanning two gallery spaces, K1 and K3, the exhibit will includetwo unique yet related body of works that together further cement his reputation as a fearless interlocutor of materials and conceptual rigor.

The first and primary grouping of works is a series of his new and widely praised “twist” sculptures (2016) shown in K1. Fabricated from stainless steel, these powerful works demand attention as they exhibit how force applied to mass can be captured as a manifestation of arrested movement. The artist has referred to similar bodies of work in a larger scale as Non-Objects (2013-2014), alluding to the in-between state where the internal geometry of a thing and its surface combine to interrupt the object’s legibility, conspiring in its own disappearance. Installed in K3, these precise formsare held in suspended animation, their volume offset by the lightness and tensile fragility of their polished surface.

In addition to the twists, Kapoor will show the work Gathering Clouds(2014) in K1. Titled sequentially I to IV, it consists of wall-mounted and pigment-coated fiberglass discs—a concave form often explored by the artist such as in his celebrated work Sky Mirrorat the Rockefeller Center, New York(2006)—­thatevoke a mysterious, unfathomabledarkness.These powerful and poetic shapes resist easy interpretation, alternating the focus on surface and depth, exploring the emotional contours of whoever is looking at them.By skillfully balancing surfaces with expertly manipulated geometrical forms and colors,the artist is able to manipulate space, thereby, inducing a physical and emotional experience in the viewer.

Anish Kapoor was born in 1954 inMumbai, India. Hemoved to England in 1972 where he studied sculpture at Hornsey College of Art and then at Chelsea College of Arts. Kapoor represented Britain at the 44th Venice Biennale (1990), winning the PremioDuemila and was awarded the Turner Prize, Britain’s most prestigious art award, in1991. His seminal projects include large site-specific installations at the Palace of Versailles (2015), Cloud Gateat Millennium Park,Chicago (2004), and Marsyasat the Tate Modern, London (2002).Kapoor’s work can be found in many prominent public collections, notably the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Tate Modern, London; Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art, Seoul; Fondazione Prada, Milan; and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. He currently lives and works in London.

국제갤러리는 8월 31일부터 10월 30일까지 물질의 한계를 뛰어넘는 정신적인 형태를 다루어 온 현대미술의 거장 아니쉬 카푸어의 개인전 《Gathering Clouds》을 개최한다. 이번 전시는 2003년 및 2008년에 이은 국제갤러리 세 번째 개인전으로, 재료의 물질적인 특성과 비정형적인 형태를 표현한 근작 19점을 K1 및 K3 전시장에서 소개할 예정이다. 독립적으로는 기묘한 독특성을 지니면서도 각기 유기적으로 연결되어있는 <군집된 구름들(Gathering Clouds)>와 <비 정형 (Non-Object)> 시리즈는 작품의 재료와 형태를 능숙하게 다루면서 작가 특유의 이미지의 반사와 왜곡 그리고 전환을 통해 시공감각 이면의 영적이고 본질적인 접근을 탐구해온 카푸어의 세계관을 살펴보는 특별한 기회를 제공할 것이다.

이번 전시에 소개되는 아니쉬 카푸어의 신작 “트위스트” 시리즈는 작가의 대표적인 연작 중 새로운 버전의 작품이자 스테인리스 강철로 가공된 조각 작품으로, 물체에 적용된 힘이 절제된 형태의 움직임으로 어떻게 전환되었는지 표현한다. 카푸어는 <비 정형 (Non-Object)>를 비롯한 트위스트 조각 연작을 통해 대상의 내적이고 기하학적 형식과 반사되는 표면을 결합함으로써 독해의 모호함뿐 아니라 작품 자체의 소멸이 일어나는 모호한 상태를 다루고 있다. 이 “트위스트”들은 상징이자 동시에 공간 속의 실체들로, 고대의 수학적 공식들 혹은 공학적 기념비들을 떠올린다.
이들의 특징은 하나의 단단한 스테인리스 철 덩어리를 불특정한 각도들을 통해 휘어지도록 하였고, 나아가 이를 원형의 곡선을 통해 제작하여 기하학적이면서도 유기적인 입체를 만들었다. 대체로 카푸어의 트위스트들은기하학적 형태 혹은 바로크적 알레고리로 잘 알려진 휘어진 운동성으로 표현되어 있다. 바로크의 건축가들이 그들의 건축물에서 적용했던 것과 같이 급진적인 운동성과 기울어진 평면들을 포착했던 것과 동일한 효과를 활용한 것이다.

아니쉬 카푸어의 작품들은 티끌 한 점 없이 매끈한 표면으로 미묘한 불안정성을 나타내며 보는 이로 하여금 무궁무진한 물질성과 친밀함을 느끼게 한다. 약 60 cm에 달하는 열 두 점의 트위스트 작품은 선반 위에 놓여지며,높이가 약 2.5 미터에 달하는 대형 작품 세 점은 전시장 바닥에 설치될 예정이다. 서로 다른 높낮이로 설치된 고요하면서도 강렬한 트위스트 작품들은 전시장 공간을 가득 채우고 관람객으로 하여금 마치 신성한 성지로 걸어 들어오는 듯한 색다른 인상을 느끼게 할 것이다.

이번 아니쉬 카푸어 개인전에는 트위스트 작품 외에도 4점의 <군집된 구름들 (Gathering Clouds)>시리즈 작품이 전시된다. 차례대로 라는 제목을 가진 이 작품들은 카푸어의 대표적인 작품으로 잘 알려진 작품과 마찬가지로 유리섬유로 제작된 오목한 형태의 디스크 작업이다. 벽에 걸 수 있는 형태로 제작되었으며 검은색 안료로 칠해져 있어 더욱 신비로운 느낌을 주는 이 작품들은 깊이를 알 수 없는 불가사의한 심연을 떠올리게 한다. 이 강렬하고도 시적인 형태들은 관객에게 작품의 표면과 깊이를 번갈아 살피도록 유도하면서 단순한 해석에 저항한다. 최근 아니쉬 카푸어는 (2004)와 널리 사랑 받고 있는 기념비적인 (2011)까지 그의 상징과도 같았던 반사적인 표면을 가진 오목한 형태의 작품들 위에 강렬한 단색면을 입혀 새로운 의미를 가진 작품으로 재탄생 시켰다. 표면과 작품 내부의 기하학적인 형태 사이에서 능숙하게 균형을 유지하는 작가는 공간을 활용한 작품으로 자연스럽게 관객의 의식에 접근하여 관객들과 신체적, 정신적인 교감을 이끌어 낸다.

아니쉬 카푸어는 1954년 인도 뭄바이에서 태어났으며 1973년 영국으로 이주, 혼지(Hornsey) 예술대학교와 런던 첼시 대학교에서 조각을 전공하였다. 1990년 제 44회 베니스 비엔날레에 영국 대표 작가로 참여 ‘프리미오 듀밀라(Premio Duemila)’를 수상하였고, 이듬해 영국의 권위 있는 예술상 ‘터너 프라이즈(Turner Prize)’를 수상하면서 국제적인 명성을 얻게 되었다. 2015년 베르사이유 궁전 정원에 대규모 설치 작품을 소개한바 있으며 테이트모던 터바인홀의 대형 설치 작품 <마르시아스 (Marsyas)>(2002) 와 시카고의 밀레니엄 공원, 공공 설치 작품 <구름 문 Cloud Gate>(2006) 로도 잘 알려져 있다. 소장처로는 뉴욕의 모마 미술관(Museum of Modern Art), 런던 테이트 모던, 밀라노의 프라다 파운데이션(Fondazione Prada), 스페인 빌바오 구겐하임(the Guggenheim Bilbao) 등 유수의 기관들이 있다.
