The pioneering video artist Bill Viola is the subject of a major solo exhibition titled Into the Light, running through August 15, 2021, at Stavanger Art Museum in Norway. Viola, widely acclaimed for his conceptual and technical explorations of video as a medium of art since the early 1970s, comprehensively showcases over twenty works—twelve video installations followed by nine early single-channel works—created between 1976 and 2013.

Of the early works on view, The Reflecting Pool (1977-1979), demonstrates Viola’s commitment to breaking free of the technical limitations and revealing the artistic potentials of video. The work builds on pertinent technical strategies of the time such as mirroring, reversing, and overlapping, as a means to represent a shift in content towards spiritual and transcendental themes. Viola not only applied these technological innovations of video to his work as an artistic feature, but also layered his work with art historical context, themes, and compositions drawn from medieval and Renaissance paintings. Taking the example of The Greeting (1995) and Catherine’s Room (2001), the former was inspired by Jacopo da Pontormo’s The Visitation (1528-1529), and the latter by Andrea di Bartolo’s St. Catherine of Siena with Four Blessed Dominican Nuns (1394-1398)—both videos function as metaphors of the original paintings, delivering ideas of personal interaction and the journey of life within a contemporary context. Apart from these centerpiece works, nine early works by Viola—curated into four different programs—will be shown in the museum’s auditorium in order to foster a comprehensive understanding of the artist.
빌 비올라, 노르웨이 스타방에르 미술관(Stavanger Art Museum)에서 개인전 《Into the Light》 개최
