The internationally acclaimed contemporary artist Ugo Rondinone is currently participating in a group exhibition titled Among The Trees (on view through May 17, 2020) held at Hayward Gallery in London. The exhibition, which celebrates the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, includes works by a roster of 38 international contemporary artists including Eija-Liisa Ahtila, Peter Doig, and Robert Smithson. Artists involved in the exhibition collectively explore the beauty of trees along with the symbolic significance of these living organisms, ultimately capturing the multifaceted implication of trees in the context of humanity and civilization.

Among the Trees features a wide range of works including immersive video installations, life-sized sculptures, paintings, and drawings. Widely recognized for his signature poetic exploration of nature appertaining to the passage of time and introspection of the inner self, Rondinone introduces Cold Moon (2011), an aluminum cast of an olive tree more than 2,000 years old. The twisted and gnarled form of the olive tree encompasses vast passages of time. The exhibition also presents an extensive selection of works based on the guiding subject of trees, such as the Cameroonian artist Pascale Marthine Tayou’s sculpture Plastic Tree B (2010) and Italian artist Giuseppe Penone’s sculpture Albero Porta – Cedro/Door Tree – Cedar (2012). Ralph Rugoff, Director of Hayward Gallery, has remarked: “At a moment when the destruction of the world’s forests is accelerating at a record pace, Among the Trees brings together the work of leading international artists who urge us to think about the essential roles that trees and forests play in our lives and psyches.”
