The internationally celebrated contemporary artist Roni Horn is the subject of a solo exhibition eponymously titled Roni Horn at the University Museum of Contemporary Art, housed in the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Widely recognized for her diverse artistic practice which encompasses photography, sculpture, and drawing, Horn consistently explores the perceptual and visual experiences of mankind within nature. The exhibition focuses on the artist’s photographic series Pi (1997-1998) which was shot in Iceland, a landscape that creates the bedrock of and background behind Horn’s artistic practice.

The title of the series, Pi, which is defined as the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, refers to the collection of cyclical events that occur in the nature and everyday life along the Arctic Circle. An assemblage of 45 large-scale photographs brings together a view of the Arctic witnessed from the windows of an elderly couple’s home, a portrait of the couple, and images of the down harvested from the feather nests of their Eider ducks. Meanwhile, the juxtaposition of stills from the daily American soap opera, Guiding Light (1952-2009), watched by many in the afternoon, against the routine life cycles of animals in Iceland, illustrate the collision of nature and culture. Horn also explores her diverse interests in the relationship between landscape, human identity, and object by capturing the continuous motion inherent in water, light, and weather. The exhibition, which offers an immersive experience of being surrounded by Icelandic scenery and people through a frieze-shaped circular installation of photographs, runs through April 26, 2020.
