The pioneering contemporary video artist Bill Viola is the subject of a solo exhibition titled The Raft at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, California. Viola is widely known to address fundamental and existential themes by portraying the sublime in universal human experiences including birth, life, and death through video. The exhibition is the first in the U.S. to introduce The Raft, created by Viola as a commission for the 2004 Olympic games in Athens.

The Raft features a large-scale video projection with the dimensions of 396.2cm x 223cm, suggesting a direct reference to the French artist Théodore Géricault’s painting The Raft of the Medusa (1819), which depicts survivors of a shipwreck on a makeshift raft. The Raft presents a group of ordinary people from all races overtaken by a sudden rush of water, huddling together for stability and helping those who have fallen once the deluge subsides. The artist captures these moments by utilizing his signature slow-motion technique, magnifying the victims’ range of emotional responses to the crisis. The exhibition, which offers the viewer a meditative and reflective experience by displaying the work within a darkened room, runs through May 10, 2020.

프랑스 화가 테오도르 제리코(Théodore Géricault)의 실제 선박 침몰사고를 그린 작품 <The Raft of the Medusa>(1819)를 모티브로 한 <The Raft>는 396.2cm x 223 cm 크기의 대형 비디오 작업이다.
