The Scandinavian artist duo Elmgreen & Dragset is the subject of a solo exhibition titled Elmgreen & Dragset: Sculptures at the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas, Texas, U.S. through January 5, 2020. Elmgreen & Dragset reinterpret familiar spatial and cultural structures that surround us in modern times with criticality and subversive wit. For this show, the duo introduces a large selection of sculptures that employ both humor and poignant sarcasm.

One of the highlighted works of this exhibition, Watching depicts a young man sitting on a lifeguard chair, peering through binoculars. In the process of viewing him, viewers conjure up what he is seeing through the binoculars in their own imaginations, yet viewers will never be able to assume the position of the young man, since he is already occupying it. Another work, One Day, a sculpture of a young boy drawn instinctively to a rifle mounted in a display case, portrays the human desire towards means of power and survival. Meanwhile, Traces of a Never Existing History, originally commissioned as part of the 2001 Istanbul Biennial, is newly installed in the garden of the Nasher Sculpture Center. In conjunction with the exhibition, the Nasher Sculpture Center has also published Elmgreen & Dragset: Sculptures, an illustrated catalogue which will be the first appraisal of the duo’s sculptural oeuvre, complete with essays and interviews.
