국제갤러리의 김용익의 대표적인 초기 천작업 연작 중 하나인 <평면 오브제>(1977)가 미국 로스엔젤레스 현대미술관 (Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles)에 소장된다. <평면 오브제> 시리즈는 비고정적인 상태의 마포 천에 스프레이를 뿌려 입체를 평면 속의 이미지로 바꾸려는 행위를 보여주는 작업으로, 1974년 김용익이 홍익대학교 서양화과에 재학시절 처음 선을 보이며 이를 통해 본격적으로 화단에 등단해 많은 주목을 받았다. <평면 오브제> 작업에서 물질과 이미지의 대립관계를 완화시키고자 했던 작가의 의도에 따라 천은 물질이 되고 천의 물질성을 통해 자연스럽게 드러나는 주름의 형태는 그것에 스프레이가 분사됨에 따라서 실제의 주름이 아닌 주름같이 보이는 이미지가 된다. 김용익의 작품은 추후 예정된 상설전과 기획전을 통해 대중들에게 소개될 예정이다. 

Kim Yong-Ik’s representative work of his early fabric series Plane Object (1977) will join the permanent collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. The artist first came to fame with his fabric series, completed during his undergraduate studies in the Western Painting department at Hongik University in 1974. In this series, the artist uses spray paint on unfixed hemp cloth to transform this three-dimensional object into an image on a planar surface. The fabric becomes an object following the artist’s intention to mitigate the dissonant relationship between physicality and image, which is reflected in the folds created by the materiality of the hemp cloth. These actual creases become images resembling itself when the artist spray paints along each fold and across the fabric. The acquired work will be introduced to the public in the future through permanent and curated exhibitions.
