뉴욕 맨하탄에 위치한 대표적인 현대미술관, 뉴 뮤지엄(New Museum, New York)은 지난 4월 11일 개관 35주년을 맞이하여 월스트리트 치프리아니에서 스프링 갈라를 개최하였다. 이 행사는 2000년을 시작으로 매년 현대 미술에 중요한 업적을 남긴 작가를 명예 수상자로 선정하여, 이를 기념하는 자리를 마련하고 미술계의 왕성한 교류와 활동을 도모해왔다. 특별히 올해 2012년의 명예 작가로는 현재 국제갤러리 3관 개관기념 개인전 초대작가이자 대표적인 미국 작가 폴 맥카시를 선정하였다.

폴 맥카시는 현재 국제적인 활동을 기반으로 인정받는 동시대 작가로서 지난 2001년 뉴 뮤지엄에서 대규모의 회고전을 가진바 있다. 폴맥카시는 뉴 뮤지엄의 현대미술에 대한 비젼과 같은 맥락으로 그의 실험적이고 전방위적인 활동을 인정받아 수상을 하게 되었다. 시상은 뉴 뮤지엄 부관장인 마시밀리아노 지오니가 맡았고 이번 행사를 통해 제프 쿤스(Jeff Koons), 엘리자베스 페이튼(Elizabeth Peyton), 조지와 안나 콘도(George and Anna Condo), 세실리 브라운(Cecily Brown), 마이클 주(Michael Joo), 리르크리트 티라바니자(Rirkrit Tiravanija)를 포함한 국제미술계 현장의 주류 작가들과 주요 인사들이 참석하여 자리를 빛내주었다. 역대 수상자로는 제프 쿤스, 리차드 프린스(Richard Prince), 길버트 앤 조지(Gilbert and George) 등이 있다.

The New Museum celebrated its 35th Anniversary Gala at Cipriani Wall Street on April 11th, gathering 560 patrons and luminaries from the fields of art, fashion, film and media. Each year, the museum selects an artist-in-honor, whose work demonstrates a profound impact on contemporary art, and celebrating the honoree at a gala dinner since 2000. For this year’s artist-in-honor, Paul McCarthy has been selected, who has been recently invited to open the inagural exhibition at the new K3 gallery.
As one of the most influential and challenging American artists, Paul McCarthy had his retrospective exhibition at the New Museum in 2001. McCarthy has developed a prolific studio practice that utilizes a stunningly diverse variety of medium, and his radically experimental approach to art corresponds to the forward-looking vision that the New Museum has toward contemporary art. The award was given by Massimiliano Gioni, the Associate Director of the museum, and the evening’s guests included Jeff Koons, Elizabeth Peyton, George and Anna Condo, Cecily Brown, Michael Joo and Rirkrit Tiravanijia, among others. Past recipients of this award include Jeff Koons, Richard Prince and Gilbert George.
